Telecommunication Mechanic I
Major Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Installs, removes, maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, and repairs voice and/or nonvoice communications systems including intercom and public address systems; alarm systems; teletype equipment; and electronic and electromechanical telephone key systems/PBAXs; terminal and communications equipment, including line drivers. Runs cables, key cables, or house wire to all telephone sets, terminal connectors, lugs, pins, or screws, associated with key telephone equipment and/or terminating equipment for nonvoice circuits.
Required Qualifications:
B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Repair, LAN/WAN networking, Media Services or related Area.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job:<\p>
Knowledge of the application and use of computers, business productivity software/applications such as Word, Excel, E-mail programs and other office productivity software.
Principals and practices involved in LAN/WAN application operations and installations.
Knowledge of diagnostic methods or practices and troubleshooting techniques in the servicing and repair of LAN/WAN equipage, servers, computers and peripherals.
Knowledge of other Operating Systems, including Microsoft Windows 98 through 2000 and Microsoft Windows NT.
Fundamentals of computer networking functions, components, and connectivity issues and procedures.
Knowledge of electrical equipment used to support computers, peripherals, and hardware.
Knowledge of current video, multimedia and computer network technology.
Required Work Experience in Addition to Formal Education/Training:
A minimum of one year previous and directly related experience.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
A-Plus Computer Certification or Microsoft Certified Licensing
Valid State Driver’s License.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE WORK<\p>
Skilled in:
Operation, installation, repair and maintenance of computers, peripherals, and audiovisual equipment.
Configuring and troubleshooting LAN applications, software and operations.
Troubleshooting computer and network connectivity.
Ability to recognize and install all necessary components for computers, peripherals, and audiovisual equipment.
Resolving hardware and software problems in multi-level, multi-location, multi-platform environments.
Providing technical support assistance to district personnel over the phone to assist them in resolving computer, application, and/or connectivity problems or issues.
Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams and manuals.
Ability to prioritize and manage own time effectively.
Implementing documentation requirements set forth by the department.
Learning quickly and maintaining current knowledge with respect to new technologies.
Planning, prioritizing, and organizing tasks and functions.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients.
Ability to communicate effectively with users at all levels of technology.
Ability to instruct staff and customers on operation and use of computers, peripherals, and audiovisual equipment and making presentations to user groups.
Preferred Qualifications:
If the candidate can do all of the above plus the preferred qualifications, then they would be hired as a level II Telecommunications Mechanic.
Ability to program and maintain digital switching equipment, attendant consoles, power and ringing relay racks, miscellaneous telephone, radio, fire alarms, intrusion alarms, and computer data circuits and related apparatus required in the central switching office.
Analyzes system failures and other unusual system occurrences to isolate the source of the problem and determine whether the failure is caused by software, hardware, or other factors.
Ability to maintain manual and/or computerized central office records, including detail records, traffic analysis records, cable records, line records, subscriber service records and spare parts inventories.
